Throughout different artistic and theatrical traditions, artists have used papercutting in very different ways: to cut a figure out of its background, to cut into the paper so that positive and negative spaces form a complete composition, to create symmetry through folding, or to build an image through repeated cutting and perforation.
From Matisse’s “drawing with scissors” and the silhouettes of Kara Walker, through Hans Christian Andersen’s intricate paper cuts, Chinese jianzhi, Mexican papel picado, and the cut and perforated figures of Asian shadow theatre, these different approaches reveal different ways of thinking about the relationship between the figure, the paper, and the space around and within it.
In this workshop, I will introduce several of these compositional approaches and we will explore them practically. We will investigate how the movement of the scissors or knife can generate a figure, a scene, or an entire composition—and how what is removed from the paper can be just as important as what remains.
The aim is to develop an understanding of papercutting as a visual language: a way of drawing, composing and storytelling through the relationship between paper, cut, light, positive space and negative space.
